This information is provided by Dr Dr Ian O'Connell.
GMC reg: 3239559A St. Andrews graduate, who spent an extra year in physiology and pharmacology for the Honours degree prior to completing the clinical years of his medical degree in Manchester, Ian returned to Scotland for his surgical house job in Kirkcaldy in 1987. He has been based around Manchester ever since, training in a broad range of hospitals including Bury, Monsall (now part of North Manchester General), Burnley, Blackburn, the Christie, and for the most part in Hope Hospital and Salford Royal. He undertook research with the Medical Research Council’s Trauma Group at Hope Hospital, forging links with the University that have remained ever since. The current emphasis is more on teaching than research, being the tutor for the Fifth year medical students at Wigan. Ian was appointed as a consultant last century, but retains a strong interest in the future, as evidenced by his involvement with educating the next generation of doctors. This is underpinned even outside work, where his children are now involved in pharmacy, nursing and medicine!
