Dr David Nylander

I graduated from University of Newcastle Medical School in 1988. I did my postgraduate training in General Medicine and Gastroenterology in the Northern region during which period I gained wide experience in gastroeterology and endoscopy I was initially appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist at City Hospitals Sunderland in 1999. There I was heavily involved in the management of endoscopy and eventaully becoming the endoscopy lead. I was also Regional Training Program Director for Gastroenterology in the region for a 4 year period In 2011, I was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and Clinical Director of the North of Tyne Bowel Cancer Screening Centre (a collaboration between Newcastle and Northumbria trusts providing screening services for a population of over 800,000). My main interest is in therapeutic endoscopy and I have set up regional services in (1) Radiofrequency ablation for Barretts oesophagus and (2) Balloon assisted enteroscopy I also have a major interest in colonoscopy and complex polypectomy and am an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening colonoscopist. I am also involved in endoscopy training and am a member of the national faculty of accredited endoscopy trainers. I run several endoscopy training courses in Newcastle I have expertise in development of services and this has been acknowledged nationally in my being awarded an MBE on the Queen's birthday honours 2021
