GMC reg: 2458014I’m a senior, full-time specialist in Pain Medicine. I founded the Royal Free’s Pain Management Service in 1997, with its highly-regarded Chronic Pain Clinic and specialist multidisciplinary team designed to help patients with pain, and the associated difficulties it can bring. I also set up the Royal Free Hospital’s Acute Pain Service to help those suffering with post-surgical and trauma pain. Now retired from the NHS, I work in my Private Pain Management practice at The Platinum Medical Centre (Wellington Hospital in St Johns Wood). I am Lead Consultant in the Wellington’s unique Pain Functional Restoration Program (Pain FRP) for pain treatment and rehabilitation after injury or serious illness. I also consult at The Wellington Diagnostic and Outpatient Centre (Golders Green), The Outpatients and Diagnostic Centre (Elstree), and the Royal Free London Private Patients Unit (Hadley Wood). I firmly believe that an individualised, patient-centred approach is important for each and every person, and understands the low mood and exhaustion that long-term pain can so often bring about. I’ve had many years of experience looking after patients with pain across a wide variety conditions, including fibromyalgia, spinal, musculoskeletal and nerve pain, post-surgical and trauma pain, and some cancer-related pain. I’ve a special interest in complex regional pain syndrome, post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles), pancreatic pain, and sciatica after spinal surgery. I’m one of the UK’s few practitioners of the Racz catheter neurolysis technique, a minimally-invasive treatment for persistent sciatica after spinal surgery. https://www.britishpainsociety.org/static/uploads/resources/files/PAN_114_web_low_res_Dec_13.pdf pages 255 to 258I’ve also many years of experience in carrying out all the standard interventional pain relief techniques such as epidurals and nerve blocks, and I also specialise in coeliac plexus block for pancreatic pain, and other painful abdominal and hepatobiliary conditions. Cannabis-based pain medicine: Much of conventional pain medicine focuses on pain medications, but they don’t always bring about good pain relief, and may have troublesome side effects for patients. My interest and skills have thus grown in the sphere of newly-legalised cannabis-based medicines, which are proving to be safe and effective in treating pain. I have considerable experience in prescribing cannabis-based pain medicines and I am Lead Clinician to Medisonal, whose goal is to provide access to affordable CBPM to patients, and to lead the way in research and education in this sphere of pain medicine. I am Past President of the Pain Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, Senior Medical Advisor in Pain Medicine to the Royal Society of Musicians, and I’m a senior doctor at the British Society of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM).
