Sub-speciality Glaucoma Training In addition to my basic training at St. Thomas’ and Moorfields Eye Hospital, I spent a year working as the Specialist Senior Registrar (SSR) on the Glaucoma Unit at Moorfields. The experience consolidated a working clinical knowledge of glaucoma patient management, in a busy clinical environment with a heavy surgical commitment. Glaucoma Fellowship Following my SSR period I spent a year at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver as a Fellow with Drs Drance, Douglas, Mikelberg, Lyons and Hollands. The fellowship involved both clinical and glaucoma research work. My research was related to optic nerve imaging and glaucoma tube surgery. Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon I obtained a Consultant post at the Norfolk & Norwich NHS Trust in April 1998. I set up a new comprehensive sub-speciality glaucoma service with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and offer a local and tertiary referral service for East Anglia. I established the Ophthalmology Curriculum for the UEA Medical School and regularly taught various UEA & St. George’s University undergraduates. In addition I have supervised post-graduate ophthalmology trainees and Glaucoma Fellows (Research, Senior and Junior clinical fellows). I have been involved with numerous commercial and in-house clinical trials/studies/audits. Epidemiology Research I was an Investigator on the EPIC-Norfolk Eye Study, which is the largest study of its type to have ever been undertaken, the aim being to identify environmental and other factors associated with glaucoma. The study is a collaboration between Cambridge University, University College London and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Trust. Basic Science Research I spent two years working on a successful basic science MD degree project with Professor Ian Grierson at the London Institute of Ophthalmology. I investigated cellular aspects of the conjunctiva in patients with increased risk of failure following trabeculectomy and related these differences to surgical outcome. More recently I have collaborated with Dr Julie Sanderson PhD in carrying out basic science glaucoma research within the Schools of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Our studies involve human retinal cell culture and investigate neurodegenerative processes aiming to (i) improve our understanding of glaucoma aetiology and (ii) subsequently develop neuroprotective strategies applicable to the management of glaucoma. We currently co-supervise a PhD and an MD student. Adherence Research Together with Dr Debi Bhattacharya within the School of Pharmacy (UEA) and other researchers in the Norwich Medical School, I have collaborated in work related to adherence with anti-glaucoma therapy. In particular studied the effect of patient support and education on adherence, but were also interested in the effect that the actual studying of patient adherence has on their adherence.
