Dr David Austin is as a consultant cardiologist with a specialist interest in percutaneous coronary intervention and is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Newcastle University. He trained in medicine as an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen. He then completed early professional training and a research MD at the University of Glasgow. Dr Austin completed cardiology specialist training at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. He then undertook an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in Halifax, Canada in 2013 to 2014. In his NHS practice, Dr Austin participates on the General Cardiology daytime on-call rota at The James Cook University Hospital (JCUH) and has regular General Cardiology outpatient clinics. His subspecialty interest is Interventional Cardiology, and he participates on the Primary Angioplasty rota (1:10 covering 1.6M population), performs cardiac catheterisation lists with a full range of invasive cardiac assessments and approximately 175 coronary interventions per year, including the treatment of complex disease. Dr Austin is the co-director of the Academic Cardiovascular Unit at The James Cook University Hospital, and has established grant-funded trials (PROACT, TACTIC, FRACTAL clinical trials) within cardiology. Dr Austin is the clinical lead for the James Cook research delivery and is on the Tees Valley Research Alliance Executive Committee. Since 2025, Dr Austin holds a British Heart Foundation fellowship (Consultant Research Award). In 2023, he was awarded a National Clinical Impact Award in recognition of his clinical and academic leadership and achievements.
