Consultant colorectal surgeon. I see self-funding and insured patients at the Spire Portsmouth Hospital. After initial consultation, patients can continue their care with me in the NHS. In have been a full-time Consultant in General Surgery with a major interest in Colorectal Surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth for over 25 years. I have worked a 1 in 7 “on call” rota to provide acute general surgical care for patients admitted as an emergency. I carry out a range of elective intestinal and abdominal surgery including cancer surgery. I have performed laparoscopic (keyhole) and open operations, colonoscopy and a large amount of minor surgery for anal conditions. My ongoing main interests are in clinical colorectal surgery and in improving outcomes in colorectal surgery. I live in Hampshire with my wife and varying numbers of our 4 children. Training I graduated with honours from University College Dublin and have two research-based degrees as well as Fellowships of the the Royal College of Surgeons and of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I obtained First Place and Gold Medal in the Intercollegiate Examination. My training was predominantly in Bristol and the south west ending with specialist training in Colorectal Surgery at St Mark's Hospital in London. Awards, Management responsibilities Holder of 4 Clinical Excellence Award points to 2019. Surgical Lead, Surgical High Care Unit, Portsmouth; Clinical Director, Colorectal Surgery, Portsmouth 2005 – 2010 and 2014 - 2015, Lead Clinician Colorectal Cancer MDT Portsmouth 2001 - 2014. General surgery - Colorectal Surgery
Rectal bleeding, anorectal pain, haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures, anal fistula, anal lumps/warts, change in bowel habit, abdominal pain I offer consultation, diagnostic assessment, advice on tests and interventions, treatments either privately or following onward referral into the NHS including: Endoscopic (telescope) assessment of bowel conditions, Botox treatment for fissures, banding and THD/Halo treatment for haemorrhoids, lay open or setons for anal fistula. I do major abdominal surgery in the NHS but not privately.
