Dr Dan McKenzie

Dr Dan McKenzie is a Consultant Cardiologist based in Bath and Bristol with a specialist interest in complex angioplasty. He works full time at the Royal United Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He provides a contemporary, evidence-based service, which is patient focused, to investigate and treat a broad range of cardiovascular problems. These include the investigations and management of chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and fainting. His sub-specialty is coronary intervention; using wires, balloons and stents to treat narrowings within coronary arteries. He is a high volume operator and performs the majority (>95%) of his cases through the radial artery, which is proven to be the safest route. He has an excellent outcomes and safety record with a complication rate well below those predicted in the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS) statistical model (0.75% actual vs. 2.3% predicted). The most important person during any investigation or procedure is always the patient and he is strongly engaged with governance and quality improvement to ensure that teams work effectively to provide the best patient care possible. He is closely involved in the education and training of Junior Doctors and contributes to a number of national and international research trials and registries. Dr McKenzie is the Treasurer for BCIS and sits on the National BCIS Council,  He has been a longstanding member of the BCIS Training and Education and is a member of the Women In Cardiology Focus Group as he strongly believes in the importance of training the next generation. He has contributed to many research studies and published papers, review articles and book chapters throughout his career. Outside work, he is a keen sportsman and cycles and runs regularly. Dr McKenzie has run many half and full marathons, cycled London to Paris and participated in cycling Sportives most years. He completed a half distance 70.3 triathlon in 2024. This year he plans to cycle the Dragon Devil ride in Wales. He has 5 children and spends as much time as possible with them and his wife, Jacqui.
