Chris Mahon graduated in medicine with honours from the University of Birmingham in 1991. He completed basic and higher surgical training in the London region where he obtained unrivalled surgical experience in the specialist departments of the Hammersmith Hospital, St Georges Hospital, King’s College Hospital, and UCL / The Middlesex Hospital. He was appointed as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Scarborough Hospital in 2004. While at Scarborough he was the clinical lead for the colorectal cancer MDT and became the inaugural Foundation Training Programme Director. He took up a post as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital in 2008. His has developed a special interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat colorectal disease, alongside a substantial practice and expertise in proctology. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and performs the great majority of colorectal resections by a laparoscopic approach. He is an expert in upper and lower GI endoscopy. He has passed the assessment to provide screening colonoscopy for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. He has performed over 5000 colonoscopies in his career to date. Chris Mahon is a vastly experienced general surgeon who maintains interests in hernia surgery, surgery for gallstones, and emergency general surgery. He has an interest in clinical nutrition and until recently was is the Trust’s lead for parenteral nutrition. He held the post of clinical lead for general surgery at Harrogate Hospital from 2013-2016, during which time he oversaw significant expansion of the general surgical department and implemented many major service developments and improvements, most notably in emergency surgery. Passionate about training, he is active in teaching and mentoring junior colleagues and allied health professionals.

Chris Mahon’s clinical interests are shown below: Minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and gastrointestinal disorders including bowel cancer, bowel polyps, diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, gallstones, peptic ulcer disease. Upper and lower GI endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy). Diagnosis and management of proctological disorders including haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula, anal tags, anal warts and perianal abscess. Treatment of abdominal wall hernias (inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia, para-umbilical hernia, ventral hernia, incisional hernia) Diagnosis and treatment of gallstones. Excision of skin and subcutaneous lesions. Diagnosis and management of functional gastrointestinal disorders including faecal incontinence, and irritable bowel syndrome. Diagnosis and management of general surgical emergencies
