(Chandra) Shekhar Biyani completed his basic surgical training in India and moved to the UK in 1993. He finished urological training as a Yorkshire trainee. Shekhar was appointed as a consultant urological surgeon to Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield, in October 2002. He introduced advanced laparoscopic procedures (retroperitoneal nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, ureterolithotomy, adrenalectomy, and cystectomy) in the department. Shekhar also mentored several colleagues nationally in various laparoscopic procedures. Shekhar’s long-standing passion for clinical skills education and simulation-based education led him to move to St James’s University Hospital, Leeds in 2015. Shekhar headed the development, implementation, and evaluation of an innovative Urology Simulation Boot camp to prepare Urology ST3 for the new role. The “boot camp model” has now been adopted by the European School of Urology. In addition, other surgical specialities have incorporated the model locally. The project won the “Shine Award” from the Trust Chief Executive in 2020. Shekhar received the John Anderson Award from the British Association of Urological Surgeons for Education and Training in 2021. Furthermore, he received the BEM (Order of the British Empire) for services to Medical Education in the King’s New Year's Honours list (2023). As a Co-Director of the Advanced Cadaveric Simulation training at the University of Leeds, Shekhar has introduced several new cadaveric courses for multiple surgical specialities and upgraded the facilities. He also secured accreditation for the centre from the RCS England. Shekhar got an opportunity to work with Urolink in 2010 and extend his passion for education and training in Africa. Under his leadership and guidance, a second urology unit with endourological facilities was developed in Hawassa, Ethiopia. He also delivered multiple courses on “Management of Surgical Emergencies” in Africa. In 2019, he received the “Special Recognition” Award by Zenith Global Health for his work in Sub-Saharan Africa. Shekhar’s commitment to clinical research is evidenced by numerous publications. Shekhar was on the ad-hoc Complications Reporting Panel of the European Association of Urology. Shekhar has made significant contributions to British Urology in a variety of ways and has earned an excellent reputation as a highly skilled endourologist, a clinical leader, visionary and educator who has achieved national and international acclaim.
