Professor Carrie Newlands BDS, FDSRCS, MB BCh, BAO, FRCSEd, FRCS (OMFS), RCPathME, FMWF I am a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Professor Emeritus in Surgery at the University of Surrey School of Medicine. I am registered with the General Medical Council as Linda Caroline Newlands (GMC 4106584). I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998 and was appointed NHS Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at the Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH) in 2003. I was Clinical Director at RSCH from 2006 to 2010. In January 2022 I began a clinical sabbatical from the NHS for research and academic work, and I left RSCH in July 2023 to continue it. In 2023 I joined the University of Surrey's newly approved School of Medicine as a founding member and Professor of Surgery, serving as Lead for Clinical Skills and Deputy for Admissions. I stepped down from those roles in 2026 and remain engaged in research and teaching as Professor Emeritus. Clinical practice Around 80% of my clinical time is spent with patients with skin cancer, and I usually carry out over 400 skin cancer operations a year. I also remove benign facial skin lesions (but offer no other cosmetic surgery), and treat conditions of the lining of the mouth, salivary gland problems, benign mouth lumps and buried teeth. I see private patients at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford. My time in private practice is limited; if you need to be seen sooner than I can offer, I am happy to recommend trusted colleagues. I am a long-standing Core Member of the Regional Specialist Skin Cancer MDT, was its Co-Chair 2018–2021 and Regional Skin Cancer Network Chair 2021–2023. Research My clinical research focuses on the evidence for the best outcomes in skin cancer. My other academic work examines unprofessional behaviour by surgeons, and how improving the culture of healthcare teams improves patient safety and staff wellbeing. I co-lead the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery (2022–current), whose research has contributed to the NHS England Sexual Safety Charter and changes to the GMC's Good Medical Practice (wpsms.org.uk). National roles Co-Lead, Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery, 2022–current Member, Royal College of Surgeons Invited Review Mechanism, 2020–current Editorial Advisor: Head and Neck 2019–current; BMJ Case Reports 2018–current; British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2006–2014 Member, British Association of Dermatologists Merkel Cell Carcinoma Guidelines Update Group Expert advisor to the NHS website (mouth cancer and wisdom teeth pages), 2014–current Awards Fellowship of the Medical Women's Federation, 2026 BAOMS Down Surgical Prize, 2023 (received July 2024) Colyer Gold Medal, Royal College of Surgeons of England, 2023, jointly with Miss Daljit Dhariwal Please see: https://www.rodentulcer.co.uk/about-professor-newlands
