Mr Ben Stutchfield

I work at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a liver transplant surgeon and part of the specialist hernia / abdominal wall reconstruction team. My specialist work also includes management of gallstones including laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole removal of the gallbladder). I perform laparoscopic (keyhole) and open operations for abdominal wall and groin/inguinal hernias at the Spire Murrayfield and Shawfair Park. I was appointed as an NHS consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2019, having completed training in Edinburgh in transplantation, biliary and hernia surgery. I spent time visiting surgical centres across the UK, Europe and the US during training and continue to develop links and collaborations with other centres. I completed a PhD in regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 2014 and continue to undertake research to improve patient outcomes. My current research interests include abdominal wall reconstruction techniques as well as understanding how algorithms and clinicians can best interact to improve patient outcomes. I have published research in the Lancet as well as other specialist journals. I serve as a reviewer for several specialist surgical journals. I am committed to using the latest research to guide my practice to achieve the best outcome for my patients.
