This information is provided by Mr Bashar Raouf Mohammed.
Bashar completed his basic ophthalmology training in the West Midlands and Bristol region, followed by higher specialist training in Aberdeen. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 2013. He subsequently specialised in Medical Retina and Ocular Inflammation through fellowship training at Bristol Eye Hospital. In 2017, he was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), a renowned tertiary referral centre. In 2022, Bashar moved to London and joined Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Ophthalmologist. His main subspecialty interests are medical retinal diseases and ocular inflammation/uveitis. Alongside these areas, he continues to practise general and acute ophthalmology. He previously served as Clinical Lead for Emergency Eye Care at BMEC from January 2018 to January 2020, helping to improve standards through the introduction of clinical protocols, guidelines and audits. The BMEC Eye Casualty is one of the largest and busiest of its kind in the UK. Bashar subsequently became College Tutor at BMEC, supporting the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ standards and promoting excellence and safety in the training of future ophthalmologists. He is currently an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ fellowship examinations and has been a member of the National Trainee Selection Panel since 2020. His expertise encompasses a wide range of medical retinal conditions, from common diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy to complex and rare retinal disorders. His additional subspecialty interest in uveitis places him in a strong position to diagnose and manage challenging cases where inflammatory and retinal diseases overlap. Uveitis, although relatively uncommon, often affects people of working age and requires a comprehensive and careful approach. A passionate educator, Bashar completed a Master’s degree in Medical Education at the University of Warwick. He has delivered Training the Trainers workshops internationally and presented at numerous local, national and international conferences. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and participated in several multicentre studies during his time at Bristol Eye Hospital. He remains actively involved in research, education and academic presentations. Bashar’s philosophy: “My ethos is to provide compassionate care to every patient, whether in the NHS or private sector. My patients are at the centre of everything I do, and I believe in sharing information openly and involving them in decisions about their care. Eye conditions can be worrying, and rapid access to an experienced specialist can be reassuring and, sometimes, sight-saving. I will always do my very best to put you at ease, explain your condition clearly and provide the standard of care I would expect for a member of my own family.”
