Ms. Sultana qualified in Medicine and did a postgraduate degree in Surgery from JIPMER, Pondicherry, India. She undertook her basic surgical training in the Mersey region. She then entered into research, earning a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) at the University of Liverpool by co-ordinating two early phase clinical trials and performing a systematic review with meta analyses of randomised clinical trials in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer. The research on systematic review/metanalyses won the prestigious Hirshberg Award for Best Abstract in Pancreatic Cancer from the American Pancreatic Association in 2006. She also won the President’s prize for Best Oral Presentation for a phase I/II trial on immunotherapy at the Annual Spring meeting of the British Society of Nuclear Medicine in 2006. Ms. Sultana undertook her higher surgical training in the Mersey region, subspecialising in Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) Surgery, including a period as NIHR Clinical Lecturer. On completion of her training, she undertook HPB with Liver Transplant Fellowships at Edinburgh, Adelaide and Birmingham. As HPB Clinical Reference Group Chair for Lancashire and South Cumbria, Ms. Sultana works closely with members of the multidisciplinary team and focusses on ensuring the best possible care to patients, with streamlined pathways. She is passionate about both undergraduate medical education as Clinical Module Lead for Surgery, and postgraduate surgical education as Surgical Tutor. Outside of work, she enjoys travelling, walking and volunteering for Lions’ Club charity events with her husband, an ENT Head and Neck Surgeon.
