Mr Ashutosh Tandon

I am a Consultant General and Benign Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals, with seven years of experience in this role. I am currently the Clinical Lead for the General Surgery Department. Prior to this, I served as the Clinical Governance and Audit Lead for the department, a role I held for five years, during which I was actively involved in initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety, experience, and surgical outcomes. My clinical interests lie in laparoscopic general and benign upper GI surgery, with expertise in procedures such as laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery and large paraesophageal hiatus hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, groin and abdominal wall hernia repair and surgical management of oesophageal motility disorders like achalasia. I am JAG-accredited for upper GI diagnostic endoscopy and have independently performed approximately 2,000 gastroscopies, 1,000 gallbladder surgeries, 500 groin hernia repairs, and around 150 anti-reflux and paraesophageal hernia surgeries to date. My surgical training was completed across South Yorkshire, Liverpool, and Oxford. I undertook a dedicated fellowship in bariatric surgery at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, where I gained valuable experience in managing complex upper GI conditions. My foundational medical and surgical education was at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions. Teaching and training are integral to my professional practice. I serve as a Royal College of Surgeons tutor for basic and advanced surgical skills courses, and I am a designated trainer for upper GI diagnostic endoscopy. I have presented research at both national and international surgical meetings and have published in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Surgery and the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons.
