Mr Antonios Athanasiou is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Sussex NHS Trust. He is an expert in minimally invasive keyhole surgery techniques, specializing in laparoscopic procedures for gallbladder disease, inguinal hernia, acid reflux, Hiatus Hernias, and various gastrointestinal conditions. Currently, he serves as the clinical lead of the Upper GI department at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Notably, Mr Athanasiou introduced the Upper GI robotic service at the University Hospitals of Sussex NHS Trust in 2022 and has successfully performed over 200 robotic procedures in the UK using the Da Vinci Robot. His surgical training was comprehensive, covering the full spectrum of general and specialist surgical practices. This included a final period of specialty fellowship at St James University Hospital in Leeds. Mr Athanasiou has gained extensive experience in upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, offering a range of minimally invasive treatments. During his training, Mr Athanasiou earned a PhD in liver regeneration, and his research interests span minimally invasive surgical techniques, improvement of patient care through innovation, and the metabolic implications of obesity. He has contributed significantly to the field, publishing over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals on various aspects of General surgery. Beyond his clinical practice, Mr Athanasiou has a longstanding interest in medical education. He serves as an educational supervisor to trainees of different seniority levels, including senior Upper GI trainees approaching the completion of their training. Since 2020, he has also held the position of a senior lecturer at the Brighton & Sussex Medical School.
