Anthony Antoniou is a Consultant Minimally Invasive Robotic/ Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark's Hospital, The National Bowel Hospital. He also consults and operates regularly at The Cleveland Clinic, London and The Princess Grace Hospital. Mr Antoniou's practice covers all aspects of colorectal and general surgery as well as acute general surgical emergencies. His main areas of interest include robotic (‘keyhole’) colorectal surgery, treating patients with colon and rectal cancer, and locally advanced/ recurrent colorectal cancer. Having graduated from Cambridge University in 1992, he trained in East Anglia, the South East of England and London. While training in London Mr Antoniou was affiliated with major teaching hospitals such as King’s College Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital (where he undertook a laparoscopic fellowship at the Hamlyn Unit), prior to his consultant appointment at The Royal Marsden Hospital in 2006. He achieved FRCS in 1996 and was awarded an MS in 2006. After completing five years as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at The Institute of Cancer Research/ The Royal Marsden Hospital he took up a position at St Mark's Hospital, The National Bowel Hospital. Mr Antoniou has been instrumental in building the colorectal unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital, a world leading cancer hospital, and this unit now treats local, national and international patients. He has also played a key part in introducing laparoscopic / minimally invasive colorectal surgery to The Royal Marsden, developing its endoscopy unit and promoting a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care for enhanced outcomes. At St Mark's Hospital Mr Antoniou's main focus is on the treatment of primary colorectal cancer robotically. He was also instrumental in developing the complex cancer service. The latter included both locally advanced and peritoneal disease. Mr Antoniou has a number of clinical and research interests within the field of colorectal surgery. Mr Antoniou has followed a traditional surgical training and was affiliated to busy teaching posts during his surgical development. He specialises in both open and robotic approached to the abdomen. He is part of a Multidisciplinary Team for the Complex Cancer Surgery cases based at The Cleveland Clinic. The members of the team are all recoginised specialists in their fields of practice. His Minimally Invasive teaching registrar post at St Mark's Hospital is highly sought after. He also supervises MD and PhD students.
