Mr Anish Shah

Mr Shah is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with more than 15 years’ experience in ophthalmology. Educated in Jersey and then Winchester, he won a scholarship to study medicine at Imperial College London in 1999. After completing six years of specialist ophthalmic training in the London Deanery, he undertook a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton, gaining advanced training in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retinal disease and retinal diagnostics including fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography. He was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at Jersey General Hospital in 2014 and became Lead Clinician for the Department of Ophthalmology in 2016. He held this role for eight years, overseeing a substantial expansion in the department’s workforce, equipment, clinical policies and imaging systems. In 2024, after 10 years as a full-time Consultant Eye Surgeon at the hospital, he was appointed Lead Clinician for the Jersey Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme, drawing on his subspecialist expertise in medical and surgical retina and diabetic retinopathy. He also co-founded Evolution Eye Care in 2020, which has rapidly grown to become Jersey's largest private eye clinic. Mr Shah provides assessment, monitoring and surgical treatment for a wide range of eye conditions including cataract, glaucoma, dry eye disease and blepharitis. He also has particular expertise in medical and surgical retinal disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, vitreous and retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreomacular traction and symptomatic floaters. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2012 and became a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology in 2013, placing third out of 441 ophthalmologists from 24 countries in the European Board examinations. He has been on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology since 2014 and is a member of the British Medical Association, the British & Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Since 2016, he has also been an active member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Quality and Safety Group. Mr Shah has extensive teaching and training experience. He has taught medical students, trainee GPs, junior ophthalmic surgeons, nursing staff and optometrists, and has supervised cataract surgery training at King’s College Hospital, the Sussex Eye Hospital and in Jersey. He was also asked to write examination questions for the International Council of Ophthalmology.
