GMC reg: 4300656I am a Consultant Physician based at the Liver Unit in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham where I specialise in Liver Disease (Hepatology) and Liver Transplantation. I am GMC accredited in General (Internal) Medicine and Gastroenterology. My expertise is in the medical management of diseases of the liver and it is in this capacity that I act as an advisor to NICE, was a panel member of the NCEPOD enquiry into deaths from alcoholic liver disease in 2013 and chaired the expert panel that redefined listing criteria for alcohol-related liver disease. I sit on several regional and national committees and acted as the National Secretary for the British Liver Transplantation Group (BLTG). I am heavily invested in primary & secondary care education and an invited speaker at national and international meetings. My research interests are concerned with equity of access for transplantation, management of alcohol liver disease & complex liver disease and nutritional therapy in liver disease. I have a PhD in liver immunology and have published on various elements of liver disease, basic science as well as writing guidelines. My Research Interest Score is 925.1 with 1,940 Citations and a h-index of 21 (ResearchGate). I have been a Consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for over 15 years and I have held several senior leadership positions within the Trust. I was the regional representative for the UK Liver Advisory Group until June 2023. University Hospital Birmingham is one of the largest Liver Units in Europe and performs over 200 cadaveric liver transplants each year. It is responsible for listing 1:5 registrations for liver transplantation in the UK. I am a busy clinician and provide acute and chronic liver failure services for a population of approximately15-16million people living in central England and Wales. In addition to my clinical practice at the Liver Unit I hold regular liver clinics in district hospitals based in Gloucester, Hereford and the Isle of Man which means that I am familiar with the management of liver disease in both tertiary and district hospital settings. I hold several advisory roles with Liver Charities and Professional organisations in the UK and have acted as a specialty advisor for NICE for the last 6 years.
