I qualified from St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, London in 1986. I undertook my post-graduate training in London teaching hospitals principally at St George's Hospital. During that time I did cutting edge research leading to my MD thesis and numerous publications. I was appointed senior registrar to the prestigious Birmingham rotation where I worked on the liver/ gastroenterology units. I was appointed Consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn in 1998. Over the last 21 years I have developed and lead the gastroenterology service. I am an associate Professor at the University of East Anglia appointed in 2010 in recognition of my teaching and educational interests. In November 2019 I was appointed Consultant gastroenterologist to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital My clinical practice is based on excellent patient centred care with outstanding key performance indicators for my endoscopic and colonoscopic practice. I am regularly referred complex cases for second opinions and have excellent feedback from patients and colleagues. I have a regional and national profile including senior roles at the Royal College of Physicians and British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). I am currently national lead for quality improvement at the BSG to improve gastroenterology and liver services nationally. In recognition of my local, regional and national work I was awarded a national silver ACCEA award in 2018. Internationally I have been nominated to represent the UK for my specialty in Europe.I sit on the workforce committee of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Part of my role involves accreditation of endoscopy units for training . I am married with three children. I enjoy golf, cycling and regular walks on the beautiful North Norfolk coast
I have over 20 years expertise in a wide range of gastroenterological and hepatological diseases. My particular interests include: Irritable bowel syndrome Gastro-oesophageal reflux/ hiatus hernia/ peptic ulcer disease Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease Coeliac disease Endoscopy Colonoscopy Liver diseases
