GMC reg: 4108081Professor Riaz graduated from Imperial College London in chemical pathology, in 1991. Further studies at the University of London saw him receive his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees in 1994. An invaluable combination for a medical career, followed by surgical training and FRCS examinations in London, along with 15 months in Melbourne, Australia. A research based PhD at the University of Lund in Sweden created further opportunity for Professor Riaz to add to his knowledge. For this and other work, he was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Appointment to the GMC’s Specialist Register in General surgery came in 2008. Ensuing consultancy posts saw Professor Riaz establish a reputation for high standards of surgical work and a focus on individual patient care. His special interests include upper GI surgery, GORD, achalasia, gallbladder disease and hernia surgery. Well developed abilities in laparoscopic and keyhole surgery ensure that Professor Riaz’s patients can benefit from a minimalist approach. They also benefit from Professor Riaz’s natural interest in his patients and his innate wish to see them return to a healthy life. Professor Riaz has served as a board member for several medical associations, including the British Association of Day Surgery. He is a NICE advisor on endoscopic procedures and examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. He is an active surgical researcher, with past involvement in numerous research projects in his field. They have been of international interest, as are the 60 publications he has authored and lectures, or seminars he provides. The benefits that come from bringing medicine into community settings are also important to Professor Riaz. He is a founder and Chair of the Health Medical and Education Centre at the Central Mosque of Brent.
