Following my pre-clinical training, I was awarded a National Scholarship and graduated with Excellent with Honours from Cairo University in 1995. My early surgical training, followed by five years of Specialist Registrar residency training, was completed in Advanced Cancer Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, a highly regarded tertiary referral centre for complex, advanced, and recurrent cancers, collaborating with Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres. During my higher surgical training, I undertook three years of clinical academic research evaluating surgical outcomes and quality of life following colorectal cancer treatment, leading to a Master’s Degree with Excellence in 1999. My research was published nationally and internationally and presented at leading congresses and scientific meetings. I subsequently completed a further three years of research in Neuroblastoma, a rare paediatric abdominal malignancy, culminating in a PhD in Surgical Oncology. I also spent additional research time at University of Bristol and Southmead Hospital investigating the impact of Diabetes Mellitus and hyperglycaemia on cancer progression and treatment outcomes, including the roles of FAS, EGF, IGF-I, and fibronectin expression in tumour biology. Further advanced clinical training in laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery was completed over six years within the East of England Higher Surgical Training Programme at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, after which I was awarded GMC recognition for Consultant-level practice. Building upon my broad international clinical and academic experience, I further developed subspecialist expertise in pelvic floor disorders and incontinence surgery through advanced training at Bristol Royal Infirmary and University College Hospital. I was awarded the National Travelling Fellowship of the Great Britain and Ireland Division of the International Academy of Pathology, enabling further international fellowship training at the Schubert-Martin Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, where I gained advanced experience in inflammatory bowel disease and ileoanal pouch surgery in adolescents and young adults. With a strong commitment to providing the highest standards of care for patients with advanced colorectal malignancy, I later joined the colorectal unit at Christchurch Hospital as an International Fellow in recurrent rectal cancer and advanced pelvic oncology, working alongside internationally recognised pioneers in recurrent rectal and complex pelvic cancers. I also refined my advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgical skills at the European Institute of Telesurgery and specialist centres in Hamburg, Germany. I am recognised as a pioneer in robotic colorectal surgery and currently serve as Colorectal Cancer Lead at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, leading service development and innovation in advanced colorectal cancer surgery.
