His practice includes breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, reconstruction and a wide range of modern oncoplastic procedures tailored to the individual needs and priorities of each patient. He has a particular interest in the care of patients with an increased inherited risk of breast cancer, including family history assessment, genetic risk counselling, surveillance planning and risk-reducing strategies. He is known for a calm, thoughtful approach and for guiding patients carefully through diagnosis, treatment decisions and recovery. Appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in 2021, Mr Leeper completed the prestigious TIG fellowship in London and holds an MD from the University of Edinburgh, where his research focused on innovative 3D breast cancer modelling. He is Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery at James Paget University Hospital and is principal clinical investigator for the BEAM study, exploring the relationship between the gut microbiome and breast cancer development. In addition to his clinical practice, he regularly prepares medicolegal reports as an expert witness. His practice brings together specialist surgical expertise, academic excellence and a strong commitment to delivering clear communication, reassurance and individualised care at every stage of the patient journey.
General surgery - Breast Surgery
My special clinical interests include the assessment and management of the full spectrum of breast symptoms and breast disease, including breast lumps, breast pain, nipple discharge, skin or nipple change, abnormal breast imaging, benign breast disease, breast cancer, family history concerns and second opinions. I have a particular interest in meticulous triple assessment, combining clinical examination, imaging and biopsy where appropriate, to achieve an accurate diagnosis and a clear, individualised treatment plan. My surgical practice centres on modern oncoplastic breast surgery, with the aim of delivering safe and effective cancer treatment together with the best possible aesthetic outcome. This includes breast-conserving surgery (wide local excision / lumpectomy), therapeutic mammoplasty, mastectomy including skin-sparing and nipple-sparing techniques where appropriate, sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary surgery, symmetrisation procedures, reduction-pattern resections, chest wall perforator flap surgery, implant-based reconstruction, and other volume replacement and reshaping procedures. I also have extensive experience in the management of benign breast conditions, including cysts, fibroadenomas, mastalgia and duct problems. In addition, I have a particular interest in family history, inherited and genetic causes of breast cancer risk, and in counselling patients regarding risk, screening, surveillance, prevention and appropriate onward referral where required.
