GMC reg: 3664313Mr Alaiyi West graduated from Nottingham University Medical School and subsequently completed basic surgical training in Newcastle. This was followed by 2 years of basic science translational research in Prostate cancer molecular biology, leading to a thesis entitled ‘The Fibroblast Growth Factor System as a Target for Therapy in Human Prostate Cancer, and the award of an MD (Newcastle). He completed his Urological training in the Northeast and, following a British Urological Foundation/Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of England-funded clinical fellowship to Vellore (India), was appointed as Consultant Urological Surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, commencing in January 2008. He has a subspecialist interest in Endourology with particular expertise in the endoscopic management of complex urinary stone disease (including obtaining percutaneous renal access) and upper tract urothelial cancer. This includes the surgical management of stone disease in complex spinal cord injury patients in collaboration with colleagues in the Regional Spinal Injuries unit. For patients with symptoms suggesting benign obstruction of the urinary flow by the prostate (BPH/male LUTS), Mr West offers a number of surgical procedures, including Prostate urethral lift (UroLift), Rezum steam ablation and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). He is the clinical lead for BPH surgery and led the development of the HoLEP service at South Tees in 2009, which frequently receives referrals for HoLEP from most hospitals across Yorkshire. He is a national Holmium Users’ Group (HUG) HoLEP mentor and, to date, has mentored 12 consultants regionally, nationally and internationally, in the HoLEP procedure. Mr West also maintains a busy general urology practice, assessing and treating patients with a wide range of other urological problems. He has completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound and employs this in his urological practice. He has been an educational and clinical supervisor to specialist registrars and foundation doctors for 14 years, and regularly on the teaching faculty for RCS Basic surgical skills courses and regional cadaveric training courses on BPH and urinary stone surgical procedures. He is actively involved in clinical audit and research, including local and national audits and contribution as local Principal investigator and sub-investigator on national multicentre clinical trials in the management of urinary stone disease. He has authored over 30 book chapters, papers and abstracts.
