Dr A Raghuram MBE

Dr Ananthakrishnan Raghuram MBE is a highly experienced Consultant in General and Respiratory Medicine who has been a practising consultant since 2002. He works at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHSFT  and privately at Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital, providing specialist care across a wide range of respiratory conditions. In recognition of his contributions to healthcare, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2021. Dr Raghuram graduated with an MB BS from the University of Madras in 1988 and went on to complete an MD at the Medical University of Madras in 1992. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2007. In addition to his clinical and academic training, he completed an MSc in Healthcare Education at the University of Bristol in 2012. Dr Raghuram did his general medical and respiratory training on the North Western rotation. He was trained in bronchoscopy at the Northwest Lung centre in Manchester and at Salford Royal Hospitals including techniques in the use of endobronchial ultrasound and has a high diagnostic rate for lung cancer using this technique. Dr Raghuram’s research was in small airways diseases. He trained in Critical Care in Aberdeen. This resulted in a lasting interest in managing patients with narrowed airways and respiratory failure and enhanced his interest in managing patients with unexplained breathlessness and persistent cough. Dr Raghuram is experienced in managing patients with Interstitial lung diseases including conditions such as sarcoidosis and pulmonary fibrosis. Dr Raghuram has an enduring interest in teaching. He has contributed to the development of the Internal Medicine curriculum nationally. He helped develop the curriculum for the Three counties medical school. Dr Raghuram has been the head of the postgraduate school of medicine at Health education England in Severn (2015-23) and chairs and hosts the MRCP PACES examination  nationally and internationally. He has been Regional Advisor, Censor, and Linacre Fellow and was an elected Trustee councillor at the Royal College of Physicians of London.  He was an elected councillor for the British Thoracic society (2019-23). Alongside his clinical work, Dr Raghuram has held senior leadership roles within the NHS and was appointed Chief Medical Officer at NHS Gloucestershire ICB in December 2023 and since February 2026, cluster of Gloucestershire/ Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICBs. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours, 2021.
