Today Hugh Savill was announced as the latest Non-Executive Director to join PHIN’s Board.

Hugh joins having been nominated by the Private Medical Insurers collectively, in-line with PHIN’s governance as required under the Private Healthcare Investigation Order 2014.

Before retiring in 2020, Hugh was Director of Regulation at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), where he worked for more than 17 years. He is also a member of the SME Advisory Panel of the Financial Ombudsman and a senior advisor at Sicsic Advisory, a consultancy specialising in regulatory aspects of insurance.

On his appointment, Hugh Savill said:

“I have extensive experience of the twilight zone between the public and private sectors, and it was this that attracted me to PHIN.
“I am pleased to be joining the PHIN Board at a time when increasing amounts of data on the cost and quality of private healthcare are now being published. This will make a real contribution to the ability of patients to make informed choices about their healthcare.
“The immediate priority is to complete the mandate given to PHIN by the CMA. As a Board member I want to contribute to that.”

Of Hugh’s appointment, Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen, Chair of PHIN’s Board, said:

“We are delighted to welcome Hugh Savill to the PHIN Board. The Private Medical Insurers are major stakeholders in PHIN’s work with a clear interest in seeing high quality information made available to patients, so participation in the Board from an individual nominated and trusted by insurers is crucial.
“Hugh joins PHIN bringing extensive knowledge and experience of the industry - having been Director of Regulation at the ABI - a deep understanding of corporate governance and the capability to master complex technical and strategic issues.
“I am sure the Board will value his input and, on their behalf, I wish him well in the role. ”
