Responding to the release of the Dr Penny Dash's Independent report 'Review of patient safety across the health and care landscape', Dr Ian Gargan, Chief Executive of The Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN), said:

Data is pivotal to patient safety

"PHIN believes data is pivotal to the safety of patients, through the development of improved and innovative medical intervention. Dr Dash’s ‘Review of patient safety across the health and care landscape’ is therefore to be welcomed with its aims of reducing overly burdensome administration and complexity, and instead replacing it with a more strategic, workable approach, that has a clear benefit to patients.

"At PHIN, we believe patient safety should be at the heart of all healthcare systems. PHIN has been at the forefront of the independent sector’s work with the NHS to share data and present a clearer picture of activity across the public and private sectors and bring greater transparency to patients, providers and regulators. This has included working on the Acute Data Alignment Programme (ADAPt) and Outcomes and Registries Programme with NHS England.

"Recommendation 8 in the report which focuses on using technology, data and analytics playing a far more significant role in supporting the quality of health and social care, aligns with our approach. We are keen to work with colleagues in the independent sector and NHS to realise this important opportunity."
