Humphrey, 79, moved from London to Somerset for a slower pace of life with his wife, Kathy. Life was peaceful until worsening carpal tunnel symptoms in his right hand began disrupting his sleep and daily activities. After receiving little support from his GP, Humphrey decided to explore private healthcare options. Here we share his story in case you are going through a similar experience.
Why consider private carpal tunnel surgery?
Humphrey recalls: “I went to the GP because it was getting worse. The nurse more or less said, ‘there’s nothing we can do about that’. I felt I received little support.”
When the tingling turned into numbness and started waking him at night, Humphrey knew he had to act. Writing, gripping tools, and even typing became difficult. “It certainly wasn’t going to go away on its own,” he says.
How do you find the best private hospital for hand surgery?
Kathy had recently undergone cataract surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Shepton Mallet , so the couple were already aware of its reputation. Recommendations from the local community reinforced their confidence.
“People said the hospital was brilliant. One person explained that smaller hospitals often have a dedicated consultant for certain surgeries, which made sense to me,” said Humphrey.
What does a private carpal tunnel consultation cost?
Humphrey was impressed by the affordability and transparency of Wellsoon private healthcare’s initial consultation.
“The consultation was only £95, and that included everything – examination, explanation, and even an X-ray if needed. In London, I’ve paid twice that just to sit in front of someone.”
He met Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Alison Edwards , who specialises in hand and wrist surgery. After reviewing his X-ray, she explained the options: a temporary injection or a small operation. Humphrey chose surgery.
Just two days later, he received a call offering an earlier slot due to a cancellation. “I was amazed at how quick it all was,” he says.
What is the private surgery experience like?
Humphrey describes the hospital as calm, friendly, and extremely efficient.
“I’ve been in a lot of hospitals over the years, both NHS and private, and this one was right up there.”
The operation went smoothly. After a few days with a large bandage and then a smaller one, his stitches were removed at his GP surgery 10 days later.
How long does recovery take after carpal tunnel surgery?
Recovery was swift. Humphrey, who runs a business distributing aloe vera products, used his own gel to help the scar heal. “It’s already very faded,” he notes.
“I didn’t realise how much I couldn’t do before the surgery until after it was done. Now, I’ve got full movement back. I’m back at the gym – lifting weights, using all the machines. No problem at all.”
Is private surgery worth the cost?
Although Humphrey has private medical insurance, he didn’t check if the procedure was covered.
“Even if it wasn’t, I’d have paid anyway. It’s not about the money – it’s about getting it sorted.”
He praises the value for money and exceptional care, adding: “We’re very lucky to have a place like Practice Plus Group Hospital, Shepton Mallet so close.”
Would Humphrey recommend private healthcare?
“If you’re thinking about having surgery there – do it. You won’t regret it.”
