Cost of your initial consultation

If you’re thinking about having private hip replacement surgery, your first step will be to have an initial consultation with a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. Your GP will need to refer you for this. In the Liverpool area, the average cost of an initial private consultation is £212, with prices ranging from £100 to £300. This varies between consultants. If you have private medical health insurance, this initial fee may be covered, so be sure to check this.

Self-funding hip replacement

Many people pay for private hip replacement surgery through self-funding. This means you pay for the cost of the procedure yourself. If you’re self-funding treatment, hospitals may charge for this in two different ways.

  • A ‘fee-per-service’ arrangement. This is the traditional way of paying for treatment. It means you’ll receive separate invoices from the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the hospital. You often won’t know the full costs until you receive the invoices – it can be difficult to get an exact price beforehand.
  • An all-inclusive ‘package price’. With this option, you’ll be given a full guide price including all the fees, before undergoing treatment. Not all consultants and hospitals offer this.

The average guide package price for hospitals in the Liverpool area was £14,094 at time of writing. They ranged between £12,285 and £15,995. These guide prices are approximations only and can be subject to change. How much you’re quoted will depend on things such as the type of operation you’re having, any special care that you may need and your consultant’s fees. Package prices differ in what they cover too. For instance, some may include the initial consultation fee, any diagnostic tests needed and any aftercare, and others may not. Be sure to check this.

Many hospitals offer finance options to help spread the cost of your procedure over a period of time. It’s always worth asking if this is an option.

Paying through insurance

If you have private medical insurance (PMI), you may be able to fund your treatment this way. PMI usually covers hip replacement surgery, as long as you’re not having the operation for a pre-existing condition. Check your own policy though, and ask your insurance company if you’re not sure. Important notes

The information in this article is based on hospitals within 25 miles of the centre of Liverpool, and the consultants that treat private patients at each hospital. This is available to search through PHIN’s website. If a hospital or consultant is not searchable on our website, this may be because they are in breach of legal duties set out by the Competition and Markets Authority.

The data is based on PHIN’s data on patient admissions that took place between 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. The costs of initial consultant fees were provided directly by consultants to PHIN. Information on guide package prices was collected through an internet search of local hospitals.
