Overview of the role
Data is at the heart of what PHIN does, so the role of the data engineer is vital in ensuring the availability of data to be ingested into PHIN, processed, and made available to the public and other stakeholders.
The Data Engineer is responsible for the delivery of PHIN’s data platform, from the storage of data as we receive it through to the generation of reports. The role involves hands-on delivery of databases and associated systems. Working under the Data Architect, they will also be expected to contribute to architectural and high-level decision making.
Key deliverables
- Build, maintain and document Azure PaaS-hosted database solutions based on the logical data model. This includes working with stored procedures, views and tables, and writing Transact-SQL.
- Build and maintain ELT/ETL processes within Azure (Azure Data Factory).
- Build and maintain Power BI Premium / tabular data models for use in Power BI reports embedded in our applications.
- Be a key technical contact for anything relating to the storage, manipulation and surfacing of PHIN’s data.
- Ensure the security of PHIN’s software and data is at the forefront of everything we do.
Essential skills and experience
- Degree-qualified (or equivalent employment experience).
- A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to support others when needed.
- A meticulous approach and attention to detail.
- The ability to multitask while remaining organised and meeting time pressures.
- Ability to manage and prioritise own workload effectively to meet deadlines.
- Communication skills – able to listen to the needs of the organisation and interpret them into a solution.
- Communication skills – able to work with stakeholders at all levels, taking a proactive approach to communication and managing expectations effectively.
- Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
- Experience with developing data solutions with SQL Server.
- Experience with Azure Data Factory or other ETL processes.
- Skilled at building and maintaining all parts of the data solution, including databases, ETL/ELT and reporting solutions. Specific skills should include writing SQL queries, Transact-SQL, stored procedures and Azure Data Factory.
- Innovation – able to understand the impact of emerging trends within data solutions and how they can be utilised within the organisation. Able to effectively evaluate products and solutions and assess their suitability for implementation.
- Highly skilled at problem solving, ensuring the most appropriate action is taken to resolve a problem. Can effectively follow an issue from diagnosis to closure.
Desirable skills
- Experience with working with sensitive data and the precautions that must be undertaken to protect it.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure.
- Skilled at building tabular models, Power BI reports and measure aggregations using DAX.
- Able to document and communicate designs and technical concepts to all audiences.
- Knowledge of the complexities and nuances of healthcare data.
