The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough is a designated major trauma centre and provides all its specialties from one site which is unique for a hospital of its size.
James Cook provides a wide range of district general hospital services and specialist services such as neurosciences, renal medicine, spinal injuries, major trauma, cardiothoracic, vascular surgery, gynaecology, urology, cochlear implant and cancer services.
It has a 24-hour emergency department which houses the major trauma centre for Durham, East Cleveland, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire and has its own helipad.
In 2012 the Middlesbrough hospital completed a £35million redevelopment of its cancer services and is now proud to provide some of the best facilities in Europe.
James Cook has a modern, central operating suite containing 20 well-equipped theatres, with two recovery areas, which is next to an adult surgical day unit (containing a further three theatres) and the children’s day unit. Two additional theatres for gynaecology and obstetrics are in the central delivery suite and there are two more in the ophthalmology (eye) day unit.
James Cook has a 21-room imaging department equipped with the latest technology and a purpose built six-bed radiology day unit.
A medical physics department with radiotherapy physics, nuclear medicine and clinical measurement is also on this site.
The hospital’s central clinical laboratory provides a comprehensive pathology service with electronic links to wards and departments.
Our laboratory colleagues were amongst the first in the country to develop round the clock on-site testing for COVID-19 and James Cook was one of the world’s first COVID vaccination centres.
