Simon Marsh trained at Trinity College Cambridge and the Clinical School, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and was one of the few students to be awarded the William Harvey Studentship in consecutive years. He qualified in 1987, receiving the London FRCS in 1992. In 1996 he was awarded an MD on the molecular biology of breast cancer by the University of Cambridge and received the Intercollegiate Fellowship in General Surgery. In 1999, having been appointed as Consultant Surgeon in Colchester, he joined 108 Medical Chambers where he is now Surgical Director of the Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic and a member of the London Breast Clinic. He also chairs the MAC.
The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic has treated more than 9000 people for groin problems, including over 400 internationals, since it was founded in 1980. It pioneered the team approach to diagnosis and treatment of groin problems and is part of the London Sports Injury Clinic. The standard anatomical repair of Gilmore’s Groin is now termed the Marsh Modification of the Gilmore Technique, reflecting the adaptations that have been made since 2010.
In 1996 he set up, and still runs, the Ivry Street Minor Surgery Unit in Ipswich, Suffolk where he performed local anaesthetic surgery, including around 200 vasectomies a year. The unit closed in 2020. He established the MD research programme at the University of Essex, where he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer. He also teaches at the University of East Anglia. He is a member of the Essex Biomedical Sciences Institute, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Association of Surgical Oncology, the Association of Breast Surgeons, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Hospital Consultants and Specialist Association and the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine.
