Professor Sue Down

Associate Professor Sue Down is a Consultant Breast Surgeon, trained in oncoplastic breast surgery which combines oncological breast cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques to provide a better cosmetic outcome for her patients. She graduated from the University of Manchester in 1998, and subsequently completed a PhD in Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham. She then undertook a prestigious National Oncoplastic Fellowship, enabling her to gain experience in advanced oncoplastic techniques before taking up her substantive consultant post at James Paget University hospital in 2013. Sue has a particular interest in surgical education, and regularly teaches breast surgery skills at meetings in the UK and abroad. In addition she is Course Director of the award winning Masters degree in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the University of East Anglia and Chair of the National Association of Breast Surgery Education and Training Committee.

Miss Down's specialist skills include: - breast cancer surgery using oncoplastic techniques which minimise post-operative issues by remodelling breast tissue to maintain breast shape - risk-reducing mastectomy for women at high risk of developing breast cancer - breast reconstruction with implants - lipomodelling (fat transfer) to improve cosmesis after previous breast surgery - symmetrisation surgery following breast cancer treatment - by breast reduction or implant augmentation
