GMC reg: 1509287Graduated from Leeds Medical School (BSc Hons 2i, Biochemistry in Relation to Medicine, 1968; MB ChB 1971). Pre-registration training in Leeds, experience on MRC Mineral Metabolism Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, then started gastroenterology training at Hope Hospital, Salford as Senior House Officer (MRCP 1974), Manchester Royal Infirmary as Tutor in Medicine/Registrar (1974-78), and Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne as First Assistant in Gastroenterology/Senior Registrar (1978-81; MD 1980). Research Associate then Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Senior Research Fellow, Section of Digestive Diseases, Yale University, USA (1980-83). MRC Senior Clinical Fellow/Consultant Gastroenterologist, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne (1983-84) and Hope Hospital, Salford (1984-89). Senior Lecturer in Medicine/Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hope Hospital, Salford (1989-98; PhD 1987, FRCP 1993). NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (1998-2000), then Professor of Clinical Science/Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist, University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (2000-16). Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (2016-19). Currently Emeritus Professor of Clinical Science, University of Leeds, Consultant Gastroenterologist for LivingCare in Leeds (NHS), private practice at Spire Leeds Hospital, and continuing research interests into intestinal fluid and electrolyte transport in health and disease, collaborating with colleagues in Leeds and USA. I am an internationally recognised investigator in the field of intestinal absorption and secretion (awarded Fellowship of American Gastroenterological Association, 2008), my research since 1980 having been conducted using a variety of electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques (for publications see ResearchGate). I was an examiner in applied physiology for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1994-2002), then question writer for the MRCP Part 1 examination and the RCP speciality examination in gastroenterology, and remain a clinical examiner for the MRCP (2001 to date). I have previously been a member of multiple committees of the British Society of Gastroenterology and I am a senior member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.

Investigation/management of: disorders of swallowing; dyspepsia, including heartburn and acid reflux; abdominal pain and bloating; oesophagitis/gastritis/duodenitis; peptic ulceration; coeliac disease; small intestinal and colonic diseases, especially Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; disorders of gut motility, especially chronic diarrhoea and constipation; pancreatic disease; general liver disease.
