GMC reg: 6031067Mr Oates is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with sub-speciality interests including Robotic Pelvic surgery, complex Urological cancer management and retroperitoneal procedures working as part of the renowned Christie Urology team. Mr Oates underwent undergraduate and Basic Surgical training in the Mersey Deanery, subsequently moving to Manchester for further Urological training. Under the supervision of Professor Clarke at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (CRUK) and the Christie, he successfully submitted an MD thesis exploring the identification and behaviour of potential stem cells in kidney cancer. Following his research, he underwent higher surgical training in the North West, being awarded his CCT in 2013. On completion of training in 2013 was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Lead Urological Cancer clinician at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation trust, as well as performing major pelvic procedures at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. He subsequently moved to The Christie in 2017. Mr Oates is an active member of the Greater Manchester Cancer Urology Pathway board, involved in improving Urological cancer care across the whole region. He is also involved in a number of nationwide projects to improve Urological cancer diagnosis and care. He is a keen teacher and is actively involved in the education of undergraduates, junior doctors and other Healthcare professionals.

He also has a specialist interest in retroperitoneal sarcoma management and highly complex pelvic disease, working as part of one of the highest volume complex pelvic surgical teams in the UK.
