Having trained in Yorkshire and then Exeter, I took up post as a consultant at York in May 2006. As well as a busy clinical practice, I have also taken on many managerial responsibilities including the lead roles at York for hip fracture treatment, acute Orthopaedic care and the National Joint Registry. I was deputy Clinical Director for the department from 2013 to 2015 and Clinical Director from 2015 to 2017. I am now the lead for Quality and Safety. I am married to Ann and have two daughters at Fulford School York. I live in an old farmhouse and enjoy the country life away from work. I enjoy gardening, walking, golf and classical music.

Special clinical interests
My aim is to improve the quality of life for all of my patients by eliminating or reducing their pain, returning them to normal activities as much as possible and where possible, delaying the need for knee or hip replacement. When replacement is required, I believe in the use of well established techniques and implants, with a track record of excellent function and longevity, incorporating modern bearing surfaces to enhance likelihood of long-term success. I now offer less invasive 'tissue-sparing' techniques for performing hip replacement when appropriate (SuperPATH and PATH approaches), allowing far less muscle and tendon division and providing an opportunity for a quicker and fuller recovery from surgery. I have particular expertise in the management of bone loss, when encountered during complex hip replacement or revision hip replacement surgery.
