GMC reg: 4362791William John Christian VAN NIEKERK was educated at Pretoria Boys’ High School in South Africa before reading Medicine at the University of Pretoria, from where he graduated in 1996 with the degree MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery). He continued his postgraduate medical training at the University of Oxford (Trinity College), and his formal surgical training on the Oxford Basic Surgical Rotation, culminating in the award of a Master of Science degree in 2000 and Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2002. Whilst undergoing his surgical training and postgraduate research degree in Oxford, he worked as Prosector of Anatomy at the University of Oxford’s Department of Human Anatomy and Genetics, and as Honorary Anatomy Tutor for Christ Church and Hertford College. In August 2002 Mr Van Niekerk was granted a commission in the Royal Air Force. In his new capacity as an RAF officer, he was appointed to the world-renowned Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Centre in Glasgow, first as registrar in plastic surgery in 2003, and then as specialist registrar in 2004. He passed the Intercollegiate Specialty Examinations in Plastic Surgery and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2009. In the same year he also joined St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns, one of the busiest and most respected plastic surgery centres in Europe. At St Andrew’s, Mr Van Niekerk worked first as microsurgery fellow, then as fellow in burn surgery, and finally as locum consultant plastic surgeon. As part of his Armed Forces commitment, Mr Van Niekerk was appointed to the post of military trauma fellow at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham in February 2010, and then as consultant in the Trauma, Burns, and Plastic Surgery services at the same hospital. Selly Oak Hospital moved to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital site in June 2010. It is a leading trauma and burn surgery centre centre, and is the hospital to which all wounded British Armed Forces personnel are evacuated - the UK’s so-called Role 4 facility. Mr Van Niekerk worked here as well as at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital until retiring from the RAF and the NHS in 2016. As Wing Commander Van Niekerk, he had an operational role which took him on deployment to Camp Bastion in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan on an annual basis for a number of years. Whilst out in Afghanistan, he worked as a military trauma, burns, and plastic surgeon in the Role 3 Field Hospital. Between deployments back in Birmingham he was one of a handful of surgeons forming part of the team that received and treated all casualties returning from Afghanistan. After the British Armed Forces withdrew from Afghanistan, Mr Van Niekerk made the decision to close that chapter in his life and retire from the RAF and NHS. He is now focusing his clinical efforts on his practice at the prestigious Cadogan Clinic in London. This is his main base, but he also maintains practicing privileges at other hospitals and clinics.
