Simon Richards I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Bournemouth and Poole, Dorset. I trained at The Royal London Hospital Medical School, qualifying as a Doctor in 1992. I achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. My Orthopaedic Registrar training was on the North-West Thames programme, based at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. I then completed two Fellowship training posts. The first was at The Mater Hospital, Sydney, Australia. The second at the renowned Pulvertaft Hand unit at The Derby Royal Infirmary. I commenced my Consultant Orthopaedic post at Bournemouth and Poole in September 2004. I am a full time NHS consultant at The University Hospitals Dorset. My Orthopaedic NHS and Private work is focused on my area of sub specialist clinical interest; Hand, wrist and elbow surgery. Conditions treated include all types of arthritis, nerve compressions (carpal/cubital Tunnel Syndrome), tendonitis (tennis/golfers elbow, De-Quervains), ligament reconstruction (skiers thumb), Dupuytrens disease, removal of lumps/bumps, and trauma (fractures and soft tissue/tendon/ligament injuries). Surgical techniques include joint replacement and arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery. My philosophy is to practise the most up-to date Orthopaedic treatment, but as importantly, have an informative approach to patients. Thus, as a patient you should expect a full consultation, and explanation of your Orthopaedic condition. From there you should be able to make an informed decision on the treatment options, and then have best practice treatment, carried out under strict infection control guidelines. Results of surgical outcome, as well as patient satisfaction surveys on some surgical procedures are monitored. I have been active in clinical research. I have published in many national and international journals including the Lancet and BMJ. I am active in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and am chairman of the East Dorset Orthopaedic Consultants Association. I live in Poole with my wife and three children. My pastimes include cycling, watersports and playing saxophone in a band (The Volatile Agents).
