Mr Samer Hamada

I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with over 25 years of experience at the Corneoplastic Unit and Eye Bank at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Trust in Surrey, where I manage complex referrals of corneal and eye surface diseases in adults and children from around the UK. I am also a founder and a medical director of Eye Clinic London, located in Harley Medical District in London. Here we perform Cataract, Refractive Lens Exchange/RLE, Implantable Collamer Lens/ICL surgeries, and Corneal Surgeries including corneal cross linking/CXL, Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP), Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) and Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK) and corneal transplant, both DMEK and DSEK. I undertook fellowship trainings with with The Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London (FRCOphth), The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (FRCSEd), the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, including achieving a master degree from Ulster University. In addition, I undertook a fellowship training in managing corneal diseases in children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I operated on and performed: more than 20,000 cataract eyes with 0% posterior capsule rupture – which is a key safety criterion according to The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ annual national audit. Mr Hamada prides himself to have some of the top visual outcomes with 100% perfect centration of intraocular lens implants and one of lowest complication rates in the UK and the world more than 1000 corneal grafts including Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP), Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) and Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK) both DMEK and DSEK.  I introduced a new innovative way to restore cornea health by performing corneal stem cell transplantation using cells from the mouth (COMET or mouth-to-eye stem cell transplantation) and he performed the first ever UK procedures using this safe and unique technique. I was also a pioneer to perform cornea neurotisation to restore cornea sensation in patients who lost cornea sensation due to trauma or severe disease, helping hundreds of patients who lost vision due to major accidents, eye and facial burns, or stem cell failure from various reasons like aniridia or inflammation. My work won the Foulds Trophy from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London. I was the first surgeon to introduce the most advanced lamellar cornea surgery called DMEK, helping to restore vision in patients who lost cornea clarity due to endothelial layer failure, for example, Fuchs corneal dystrophy. Now I teach this innovative technique to my colleagues and future corneal surgeons.  I am proud to be a pioneer of the first consultant led Dry Eye Clinic both in NHS and private sector, offering our patients various treatments including Intensive Pulse Light/IPL and Plasma Serum drops.

I have an extensive set of skills, both clinical and academic, to perform surgeries in the most complex cornea and vision correction cases for both adults and children. Early in my training, however.
