GMC reg: 6101720I have been a consultant surgeon specialising in knee surgery since 2016. My NHS practise is based in the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (Oswestry), one of only 4 stand alone specialist orthopaedic centres in the UK. Oswestry enjoys an international reputation as a centre of excellence in orthopaedics. Oswestry is a tertiary referral centre (hospital where other specialists send complex cases). Since I started there, I have been seeing people, from all over the UK, with complex problems and people seeking a second opinion. In the last few years, I have been involved in producing a number of national commissioning policies regarding osteochondral allografts (transplants within the knee) and focal knee resurfacings. I was also part of a national group of osteotomy specialists that produced a national consensus document. I am the Director of Medical Education at Oswestry (since 2019). Our training programme for surgeons is one of the most prestigious in the country, maintaining its high standards is a tough task but something I really enjoy. In 2021, I set up a national complex cartilage meeting, which I run monthly. The meeting pulls in specialists from all over the UK to discuss complex cases so we can improve care of people who suffer from these challenging problems. I am regularly asked to lecture both nationally and internationally.
Trauma and orthopaedic surgery - Foot & Ankle • Trauma and orthopaedic surgery - Hip & Knee
My job is highly specialised and I perform a correspondingly large number of knee operations each year. I perform a large volume of knee replacements (full or partial), arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery, osteotomies (re-alignment surgeries) and have a special interest in dealing with young arthritis, trying to rebuild their joints. I deal with all aspects of knee surgery except revision (re-do) knee replacements. Yearly, I perform: over 100 total knee replacements, about 30 partial knee replacements, over 25 osteotomies, over 200 knee arthroscopies (keyhole surgery), over 30 ligament reconstructions and over 25 cartilage regenerative procedures. These numbers are about twice the number the average UK surgeon achieves in a year I also perform a number of knee injections including PRP (platelet rich plasma) and arthrosamid. I work very closely with a team of scientists from the University of Keele and involved in collaborative research with them. I am very fortunate that this keeps me at the forefront of developments in my field. We regularly publish our work and present our findings internationally.
