Mr Michael Clarke is a Consultant Specialist Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgeon. He qualified from the University of Nottingham Medical School and completed his specialist higher surgical training in South West England. He works at both the Duchy Hospital and the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Cornwall. Michael completed a 12-month advanced fellowship in upper GI & bariatric surgery in Auckland, New Zealand, prior to his appointment as a Consultant Surgeon, as well as a mission to Africa performing complex groin hernia surgery. He completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) at the University of Bristol, has published more than 20 research articles and is currently an investigator in ongoing national and international research trials. He is the Royal College of Surgeons ‘Surgical Tutor’ responsible for overseeing the delivery of surgical training in Cornwall. Michael specialises in gallstones, abdominal wall and groin hernia surgery as well as diseases of the oesophagus (gullet) and stomach. This includes gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatus hernia, achalasia, bariatric (weight loss) & metabolic surgery. He established the oesophageal physiology studies unit in Cornwall (24 hour pH monitoring and high resolution manometry) and regularly undertakes upper GI endoscopy. Michael lives in Cornwall with his wife and three young children.
