GMC reg: 4397498Professor Fehily was born in Dublin and attended medical school at Trinity College Dublin before undertaking surgical training in the Northwest of England. His final years of training focused on lower limb surgery and especially hip surgery. After starting his consultant post in 2007, he focused purely on hip surgery. In 2014, he left the NHS to set up The Manchester Hip Clinic at Spire Manchester and focused on both hip preserving and replacement surgery. In 2018, he performed the first robotic assisted hip replacement (Mako) in the North West and in the short period of time since then, Spire Manchester has become the highest volume Mako surgical centre in the UK.
Hip Surgery
Professor Fehily specialises in surgery of the hip and has a particular interest in hip preserving or key-hole surgery and innovative robotic hip replacements. He is one of the leading hip arthroscopy surgeons in the UK and performs over 100 of these procedures a year. He has pioneered the use of stem cells in hip surgery to regenerate cartilage damage. He has pioneered the use Robotics in hip replacements and was the first person to carry out a MAKO robotic hip replacement in the North West of England and performs the full range of hip replacement surgery from young patients with childhood disease to older patients who wish to maintain an active lifestyle. Last year, he performed the most robotic hip replacements in the UK. Professor Fehily treats patients from all over the UK and internationally. He is the lead on many surgeon education courses, training other consultants from all over the UK and Europe in both key-hole and robotic hip replacement techniques. He regularly treats high-level athletes, ranging from dedicated amateurs to Commonwealth, World Championship, Olympic and Premier League competitors. He regularly treats professional athletes from sports including football, rugby, taekwondo, squash and athletics amongst many others. He is a keen educator and leads (lower limb) a masters program at Salford University and has published many papers in peer reviewed journals. He works closely with industry to develop new education programs, techniques and surgical devices to improve patient care.
