Mr Mark Flowers

Mark Flowers qualified at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1984 and pursued a career in Orthopaedic surgery, training in London (RNOH), the West Midlands and South Yorkshire. He then undertook a fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic and trauma surgery in Canada at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto in 1997. Having been appointed as a Consultant in Sheffield in 1997, Mark has continued his full-time NHS commitment in the Sheffield Children’s NHSFT where he is currently the Departmental lead for coding, for transition and the Associate Medical Director for the Surgery, Critical Care and Diagnostics Care Group, and at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT as the senior foot and ankle surgeon with a neuromuscular interest.  He has developed sub-speciality paediatric orthopaedic experience in hip dysplasia, in talipes, in spinal dysraphism and myelomeningocoele and, having established a sports-injury clinic, in sport-related conditions of the ankle and foot. Mark’s adult orthopaedic interests are in the foot and ankle, covering the breadth of this sub-speciality and including minimally invasive surgery, ankle arthroscopy, surgery for ankle instability, pes planus, the cavovarus foot, arthritis of the foot and ankle, hallux valgus (bunions), Morton metatarsalgia and claw toes. He also has extensive experience in the surgical care of neuromuscular conditions in adulthood. Mark has a continued an active involvement in clinically-based research as honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sheffield. He is also a reviewer for peer-reviewed foot and ankle journals. Mark is a member of the British Foot and Ankle Society, the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association and the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery. He has served the latter as a board member for 12 years including as President (2016-18). He provides expert opinion for medicolegal and negligence purposes with experience developed over the past 23 years. Mark is also a member of the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate Assembly, an adviser to NICE and to NHS England. Mark's private practice is based at Circle Health Group Thornbury Hospital where he leads the Foot and Ankle Service - a comprehensive and multidisciplinary team providing assessments, imaging, orthotic support, physiotherapy and a broad range of surgical interventions for the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions. Mark is also the Hospital Clinical Chair.
