GMC reg: 6120333I am a Consultant Colorectal and General surgeon with an interest in colorectal cancer surgery and all general colorectal complaints as well as lower GI endoscopy. I have particular expertise and interests in colorectal cancer and peritoneal malignancy surgery (treatment and prevention); pelvic floor surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. My undergraduate training was in Bristol where I graduated "with Honours" in 2005. I undertook post graduate training in the South West and later Basingstoke and was awarded the Gold medal for my FRCS surgical exit exam for scoring the highest mark in the country. I have published over 40 scientific papers, 2 books and co-authored the chapter on "Surgery for rectal cancer" in the internationally available "Companion series". I am both an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University, and Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Bath. I was awarded a Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery by the University of Strasbourg, France and have received a £32,000 research grant for investigating the role of VEGF in colorectal cancer. I am currently an Editor and also reviewer for 14 Journals in Surgery and have reviewed grant applications for the “Bowel Disease Research Foundation”. I speak locally and nationally on colorectal surgery. At the RUH, I am Specialty Tutor in surgery; Lead for Clinical Governance and also Lead for joint Colorectal and Gynaecology Pelvic Floor Surgery and colorectal lead for the Gynae-Oncology service (a tertiary referral service for gynaecological cancer patients). I participate in the General Surgery on-call and very much enjoy endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic). I am a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI); European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and The Pelvic Floor Society (TPFS). I provide a measured, thorough, methodical and bespoke approach to patients’ problems, and am committed and dedicated to delivering the highest quality of personalised care to my patients recognising and valuing each patient's unique situation and circumstance. I comprehensively audit both my operative and endoscopic practice and have higher than average national outcomes. Outside of work I am an avid reader of the history of surgery; anatomy; philosophy (particularly epistemology and theology which are great passions!); evolutionary biology and I also enjoy watching and playing tennis (although I seem to have much less time for this nowadays!). I am happily married with a young family and live in the beautiful South West of England.
