GMC reg: 6077089Mr James Hopkins is a specialist Upper GI and Metabolic Surgeon, Bariatric Endoscopist, and the Clinical Lead for specialist MDT services at North Bristol NHS Trust. He is the Local Principal Investigator for National Bariatric Surgery (ByBandSleeve) and Gallstone (Sunflower) Clinical Trials. He specialises in Gallstones, Gallbladder Surgery (Keyhole Cholecystectomy); Anti-reflux (acid reflux) Surgery, Fundoplication & Hiatus Hernia Surgery; Hernia Repair (Inguinal, femoral, incisional, para-umbilical, epigastric) – either keyhole (laparoscopic hernia) or open, including Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgery for complex incisional hernias, recurrent hernias or very large hernias. He is one of Bristol’s leading bariatric surgeons, performing surgery for complex obesity, weight-loss surgery (gastric band, one anastomosis gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy); also Endoscopic (OGD) procedures for diagnosis (including OGD under GA), weight loss (Gastric Balloons), and reflux. Mr Hopkins completed post-graduate medical training at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital. Prior to medical school, he earned a degree and doctorate in Biochemistry and Metabolism at the University of Oxford, and was a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Mr Hopkins underwent higher surgical training in the Wessex Deanery, with a concurrent clinical lectureship at the University of Southampton, and sub-specialist training at the Solent Centre for Digestive Diseases at QA Portsmouth, specialising in bariatric surgery. Following this, he undertook a post-CCT Bariatric surgery fellowship at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton before joining North Bristol. Mr Hopkins is a full member of AUGIS, BOMSS, and a former committee member of the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry. When away from work, he spends most of his time with my family and four lively children. He is a keen triathlete and you may meet him running or cycling on the roads around Bristol & South Wales.
