GMC reg: 6080734Mr Ghulam Abbas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a fellowship trained spinal surgeon. After completing his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Yorkshire, he sub-specialised in spinal surgery. Abbas did his spinal surgery training at Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield spinal units. He is trained in the management of adult degenerative spinal surgery, spinal trauma, spinal tumour surgery, spinal infection surgery, minimally invasive spinal surgery and paediatric spinal deformity. Abbas has special interest in sports-related orthopaedic and spinal injuries and achieved MSc in Sports Medicine at Roehampton University of London. Abbas believes in shared decision making for complex spinal disorders for the best patient outcomes. He is the Clinical Lead for the framework of a spinal multidisciplinary team which includes spinal surgeons, MSK radiologists, medical and pain specialists. He has completed British Orthopaedic Association’s Leadership and Management Fellowship and is working in various leadership roles. Abbas believes the British Spine Registry (BSR) is an important tool for data capture for clinical audit to improve patient safety and monitor the results of spinal surgery in the UK. He is the Clinical Lead for British Spine Registry at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Abbas is passionate about spinal teaching and is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy. He completed his teaching fellowship at St Georges University of London. He is involved in teaching junior doctors, GPs, nurses and allied health professionals. He regularly organises Thursday morning orthopaedic and spinal teaching for trainee doctors from the East of England (Cambridge Rotation) at his hospital. Abbas has published widely in a number of peer-reviewed orthopaedic and spinal surgical journals. He is actively involved in research into spinal surgery. He has presented his research work at national and international conferences in the UK, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
