GMC reg: 6083322Mr Desai was awarded a postgraduate degree in Trauma and Orthopaedics (Master of Surgery) in 1995. He worked as an Orthopaedic consultant from 1995-2004 in India with a special interest in trauma, bone infection and degenerative spine diseases. He then had the opportunity to work as an Orthopaedic trainee at various centers in the UK, before he was awarded a National Training Number (NTN) and speciality programme in Rehabilitation Medicine from 2007 to 2011 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Mr Desai worked as a consultant in Neurological and Trauma Rehabilitation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then Stoke-on-Trent from 2011 to 2012, before joining as a consultant at the Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre (London SCIC), Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust, Stanmore in June 2012. He was appointed as an honorary Senior Lecturer in Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University College London and continues in this role. His routine work at the London SCIC involves specialist rehabilitation of complex traumatic and non-traumatic spinal injuries in adult patients, including SCI with polytrauma, cauda equina compression, malignant and non-malignant spinal tumours, management of complex spasticity - including Botulinum Toxin injections, intrathecal Baclofen drug delivery, nerve blocks, neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal interventions and Osteoporosis management. He has also successfully developed a regional specialist spinal rehabilitation service for Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression, Cauda Equina Syndrome and SCI with polytrauma patients, at the London SCIC. Mr Desai was awarded "Best Tetraplegia Service for Year 2016" by Regain Sports Charity, UK. Holistic, multidisciplinary and patient centered care are the core values of Mr Desai’s practice, for successful physical, psycho-social and vocational rehabilitation following complex long-term neurological conditions and polytrauma. Mr Desai also undertakes the management of SCI in private settings like The Wellington Hospital, London and The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, Aylesbury. Mr Desai has presented his academic and research work at various National and International Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic conferences.
