Mr Dr Ilias Giarenis

I am a Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist Urogynaecologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. I completed my general training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the East of England prior to undertaking a two-year urogynaecology research fellowship with Professor Linda Cardozo. I was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) by King’s College London for research in the assessment of female lower urinary tract dysfunction. I gained subspecialty accreditation by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists following the completion of a further three-year advanced training programme in the Department of Urogynaecology at King’s College Hospital in London. I offer a comprehensive service for women with pelvic floor disorders. My clinical expertise includes investigation and treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, recurrent cystitis, painful bladder syndrome and childbirth injuries. In addition to my urogynaecology practice, I also provide a full gynaecological service looking after women with heavy or irregular periods, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, polyps, fibroids and menopausal problems. I actively involve women in decision making and support them to make fully informed choices about their care offering up-to-date and evidence-based management options. I work with a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists and nurses and consider conservative treatments before proceeding with surgery. My priority is using effective techniques enabling a quick recovery and return to normal activities. I prospectively audit my surgical outcomes by submitting validated data to the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) audit database. While I have been mainly a clinician, I have also contributed significantly to developing medical knowledge through my involvement in several national and international research studies. I have published 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented more than 80 abstracts in national and international conferences. My main areas of research interests include the assessment of lower urinary tract dysfunction and management of recurrent stress urinary incontinence. I am currently the Chair of the European Urogynaecological Association (EUGA) Publication Committee and member of the BSUG Research Committee.
