I am a Consultant Colorectal, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon performing colorectal surgery and colorectal operations on the NHS and privately, at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull and HCA Harborne Hospital, Edgbaston. I have specialist interest in minimally invasive techniques for the management of colorectal and general surgical conditions, including laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) to treat hernias and all colorectal conditions (cancer and inflammatory bowel disease), and novel techniques to treat haemorrhoids (THD, Rafaelo), as well as diagnostic colorectal procedures including colonoscopy. I qualified in 1998 at Birmingham University with Honours in Surgery. In between junior and senior house-jobs in the Midlands, I lectured in anatomy at Birmingham University. I subsequently undertook a period of research into the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which I was awarded an MD by Warwick University. After registrar training in the West Midlands, I secured an Association of Coloproctology of GB&I Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at Leeds, gaining considerable experience of advanced laparoscopic techniques, including ileo-anal pouches. Additionally, I developed a specialist interest in the surgical management of advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. I have published and presented widely on a variety of colorectal and general surgical conditions. On completion of training, I took up post as Consultant Surgeon in July 2011. I have had a key role in advancing laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Heartlands Hospital and set up a service for patients with locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer, which has expanded to treat patients from around the Midlands. I am on the teaching faculty of a number of postgraduate courses, including CCrISP, and previously established the Royal College of Surgeons' "Strategies in Emergency General Surgery" and the ACPGBI "M42 Coloproctology for Junior Surgical Trainee" courses. I sit on the Executive of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland as Honorary Treasurer. I also have a continuing interest in clinical research and supervise a PhD student. I established both The Birmingham Colorectal Clinic and The Birmingham Haemorrhoid Clinic to offer high quality private care for patients in Solihull and Birmingham. As well as treating patients with bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, I treat a large number of hernias, using both open and keyhole surgical techniques, all colorectal conditions, with a special emphasis on the management of haemorrhoids, for which I offer a number of different treatment options which we tailor to the patient.
