GMC reg: 3102747Barry Clements BSc MD PGCert Med Ed FRCSI, FRCS [Glasg], FRCS [Gen] Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust Director Emergency Surgical Unit [EmSU] and Surgical Ambulatory Service [SAMS] RVH. Lecturer Queens University Belfast Barry Clements qualified from Queens University Belfast in 1985 with Honours. An intercalated degree in Medical Microbiology provided the foundation for his postgraduate research into the pathophysiology of Biliary Obstruction in the Department of Surgery in Belfast under the Direction of Professor Brian Rowlands. He was awarded a prestigious Surgical Infection Society Fellowship from North America in 1991 to pursue this work which yielded important publications and prizes both nationally and internationally. He was appointed as the Woolfson foundation Laparoscopic Fellow in 1995, working under the tutelage of Professor Michael Bailey in the MATTU in Guildford. Barry joined the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast in 1997 as an Upper GI Surgeon where he works as a busy clinical practitioner, active academic and lifelong teacher and trainer. In 2013 the Regional Upper GI Unit was formed along with the Emergency Surgical Unit of which he is the Director. The EmSU has been in operation for 6 years and has just had its 30,000th admission. This Unit has revolutionised the management of Unscheduled care in Belfast and with the evolution of the Surgical Ambulatory Service[SAMS], management of surgical emergencies continues to evolve in a positive fashion.
