Mr Shafiq is a Cambridge University graduate and completed medical school training at Oxford University Medical School in 1991. He started a career in Paediatrics and developed his interest in Ophthalmology and Paediatric Ophthalmology becoming a Consultant in 2001. His specialisations are in adult cataract surgery, performing over 1500 operations per year. He has consistently performed more operations than any other surgeon in Newcastle per operating session for many years. He has in 2021-2022 the lowest complication rate for all the high volume surgeons, with a complication rate called posterior capsule rupture rate of 1 in 500 operations. That means that he has five times fewer complications than the standard accepted rate and has half the complication rate of the next lowest rate, for Newcastle surgeons who perform high volumes of cataract surgery. In 2022-23 the National Ophthalmology database verified that he had ZERO complications for the 718 operations audited This means he is a very safe surgeon by all published standards, over a period of measured recent years. Mr Shafiq enjoys his work immensely and takes pride in his ability to establish a rapport with adults from all generations, and in his ability to communicate the nature of the eye problem and the plan for its treatment.
